Hosting a website takes a heavy toll on the environment. From the energy it takes to power computers on the user’s end to the energy necessary to host a website on a server that is “always on,” websites are simply not “green” creatures.Between 2000 and 2005, energy consumption related to the Internet has doubled and it has not stopped growing since. Although only a small proportion of this increase is due to different people accessing the Internet on a daily basis, nearly 90 percent growth in energy consumption is due to the number of new servers that are used to keep websites up and running.

How this translates into energy? Some environmentalists believe that the amount of energy needed to run the servers in the U.S. alone was equal to five nuclear power plants. If you consider all the servers in the world, the energy consumption is equal to that of 14 plants. It cost over seven billion dollars to feed the servers of the world in 2005 and that costs have continued to increase.Studies have shown that by the year 2020 that the web hosting industry will be as big of a polluter as the airline industry. Click here to read the third party analysis. At a time when everyone is concerned about the environment and diminishing energy resources, it is a very real problem. There is not one that will easily disappear, but because the Internet is integrated into the fabric of our society. Many, if not all, businesses are dependent on the Internet or otherwise, making it an economic engine.

The Solution:

Green Web Hosting from GreenHostr:

At GreenHostr we purchase Renewable Energy Credits to compensate the carbon emissions from our servers. Each credit is worth 1MWH and are Green-e Certified RECs, all credits we purchase are registered, verified, and retired from the market. We do also donate 10% from every purchase to green peace. We are the only hosting company that does this! We are passionate about the environment and we want make the the internet green.

Other “Green” Companies:

Many other “green” web hosting companies claim to be green while they plant trees, this may seem a good idea but when you find out some web hosts plant 1 tree per server, you may want to think again. So how long does it take the tree to absorb the emissions from you server? The average server produces the same emissions as a 15 mpg SUV. Let’s look at the offset of trees. A twenty-five year old maple tree absorbs 1.1kg or 0.0011 tonnes per year of CO2. So, over 25 years you need 36 maple trees to offset one tonne of CO2. The average server though produces 12½ Tonnes of CO2 each year, that is a huge amount of CO2! The Best idea is to stop deforestation in malaysia and africa, thats why we donate to greenpeace which trys to stop deforestation.
